Tilman Latz is director of Latz + Partner LandscapeArchitects + Urban Planners in Kranzberg, Germany. He graduated in landscape architecture in 1993 from the University of Kassel and completed his studies with an intermediate year at the Architectural Association London. He graduated in architecture in 1997 from the Kassel University.
From 1997 until 2001 Tilman worked at the studio Jourda Architectes, Paris, on projects in France and Germany. He was a project leader for a key project of the IBA-Emscher-Park, the Advanced Training Academy in Herne-Sodingen on the site of the former Mont Cenis colliery, which is a prototype for sustainable construction and use of solar energy. He led also projects in Lyon (the new market hall on the Place du 8 Mai) and in Bordeaux (greenhouses and several buildings for the new Botanical Garden).
In January 2001, Tilman joined the office founded by his parents as a partner and lead designer. In March 2011, Tilman took over Latz + Partner as the sole owner.
In his work Tilman Latz deals primarily with redevelopment projects, with the interface of architectural and engineering constructions and landscape, with the meaning of material and memory as well as with the ecological, social and political capabilities of combined strategies for architecture and landscape in urban spaces. Some of the projects he has led are the International Architecture Award – winning conversions of the old harbour site in Bremerhaven into the core of a new town quarter and of the largest intra-urban brownfield into the Parco Dora in Turin, the conversion of the former goods harbour Port Rambaud, the ‘Jardin Public Aval’ in Lyon, the Green Good Design Award – winning Place Flagey in Brussels, St. Peter’s Square in Manchester and the city park “Kleiner Tiergarten” in Berlin.
He will show the Parco Dora in Turin, the Bremerhaven transformation project and two town squares (Place Flagey Brussels and St. Peter’s in Manchester).
Commissioned as the leading party in a multidisciplinary team for the Crystal Palace Park Masterplan in 2006, Tilman established a Latz + Partner branch office in London working until 2011 on a number of projects in the UK. Besides its work in the European Union, the office is currently engaged in Israel, Russia and China.
Tilman Latz taught studios at the School of Design, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and has worked as a visiting critic and lecturer at different national and international universities and institutions. 2012 – 2014 he has been a visiting professor at the University of Kassel.
